Portobello Market Day 2016

FreddoWe’re a hardy bunch on the Otago Peninsula and Sunday’s market was a good test of that resolve. The blustery weather and squally showers were a reminder that we are well into winter. Despite the weather the market was very successful and well attended by around 600 people. Once again Jonathon Usher and Pippity Pop proved very popular with children and adults alike and there were plenty of bargains to be had. The support we receive from Cadbury’s really helps the market day, and has become a popular event in Portobello. We look forward to hosting it again next year.

Portobello Market Day

Coronation Hall Crowd

It was a crisp frosty start for the Portobello Market day on Sunday 12th of July, but the sun did its best to warm people up, and Portobello put on a great day. With over 900 visitors to the market stall holders were kept busy and there was plenty of goods for people to browse through. Once again balloon artist Pippity Pop and magician Jonathon Usher kept the crowds enthralled with their skills. With free Cadbury to give away chocolate visitors were kept happy with plenty of sweet treats. Overall, the 2015 market day was a great success and continues to grow as one of those “must do” events on the Dunedin calendar.

Magic Day at the Portobello Market

Magician Jonathan Usher with money burning a hole in his pocketIt was a magic day at the Portobello Market held in conjunction with Cadbury’s Chocolate Carnival on the Otago Peninsula. A beautifully warm day brought nearly 1000 visitors from around the region and overseas. With a good number of stalls, food, entertainment and plenty of free Cadbury’s chocolate Portobello put on a great day for everyone. Highlights for young and old was an entertaining  performance by magician Jonathan Usher, who wowed the crowd with his patter and his magic. Balloon performer Jay also had an enthusiastic and lengthy queue of children wanting balloon hats, animals and cartoon characters.

It was also great to see local music teacher Mary Jennings and some of her local Peninsula students give a performance on the Coronation Hall stage. Local groups  contributed to the event by putting on stalls and used the event as an important fundraiser for their organisations in our community. The Cadbury’s Carnival is a popular event for the Peninsula and the Dunedin region and the generosity of the company for its sponsorship is greatly appreciated. Hope to see everyone in Portobello next year. Click on pictures to see in full size viewer.
